Capitol Grand South Yarra

Our challenge

We were tasked with the iconic Capitol Grand project that is located at the centre of the vibrant South Yarra (specifically on the corner of two of the busiest tram and arterial corridors within this precinct, Toorak Road and Chapel Street). Toorak Road was also being relied on as a critical access corridor to offset road network capacity reductions as a result of the Melbourne Metro works along St Kilda Road. The project was to develop a construction transport management strategy that was responsive to the existing multi modal transport tasks, whilst providing Multiplex with a safe and effective working environment.

Our impact

We assisted Multiplex gain authority approval for an innovative solution that relied on the Chapel Street pedestrian footpath for construction loading activity during the day, with the footpath then reverted for pedestrian use after hours when pedestrian activity is as its highest. We convened and lead multi stakeholder meetings to present the strategy as a win - win for all stakeholders. Our thorough understanding of the interacting challenges coupled with our detailed documentation provided road authorities with the confidence to approve the strategy. Operationally, Multiplex have been able to rely on this strategy to deliver improvements in public safety by completely separating pedestrians from construction activities and ongoing construction efficiency.
